A collection of ledgers from the American Cigar Company.

This collection contains materials related to the cigar and tobacco industry in the United States, with a focus on Tampa manufacturers. Included are documents related to labor union organizing at local levels and membership to the Cigar Makers' International Union of America, tobacco industry publications, cigar art, advertisements, and other assorted documents.

This collection contains official documents, stock and shareholders' information, meeting minutes, cigar label art, family photographs, family clippings, and similar records of a factory in Tampa and comprises a variety of materials that document the history of the Corral family and the rise of Corral, Wodiska y Ca.'s in Tampa during the early 1900s.

This collection contains materials utilized for research on the life of Tampa cigar tycoon D. Angel Cuesta, including photographs, documents, and C.D.s. Many of the materials in the collection are recreations of original materials, including documents and photographs from the 19th century.

L. Glenn Westfall, a retired professor of history, donated his Research Files to the Nelson Poynter Memorial Library during the summer of 2005 and a subsequent accession in 2006. The Subject Files follow an alphabetical arrangement and generally maintain the subject designations established by the donor. These boxes represent the largest portion of the collection (4.0 linear feet). Major holdings include research and primary source documents on the Alafia River area, the cigar industry in Florida, mutual aid societies, cultural activities in Ybor City, immigration patterns in the Tampa Bay region, and biographical files. Areas of special interest include clipping files that document activities in the Ocala during the 1880s and 1890s and records of gatherings from the Tampa Old Timers Association during the early 1970s. All manuscript materials in the second accession (boxes 10 and 11) fall into this category. Items in the Sanchez and Haya Real Estate Holdings boxes illustrate the business activities of a company that acquired and sold land parcels during the boom-era days of the cigar industry. Financial records from the late 1920s and early 1930s offer a portrait of the company's assets and liabilities. Abstracts of title provide historical research for various blocks and tracts of land in Ybor City. Thiese boxes also include correspondence sent and received by Martin Carrabello, a Tampa attorney who oversaw the estate after some members of the Sanchez and Haya families had passed away. The Serials and Periodicals box contains various publications collected by Westfall. In addition to newspaper articles and clippings written in the mid and late 1970s about the status of Ybor City, researchers may also consult various issues of the Bulletin of the Suncoast Archaeological Society (coverage 1976-1980) and articles and papers written by Westfall. In the Cigar Art and Miscellaneous Materials reside two distinct types of materials. The cigar art includes lithographic prints and images from cigar manufacturers and printers. This box also contains records of artillery training exercises at Fort Sill, Oklahoma, during the First World War. One item comprises the Government Documents series: the bound "Register of Prisoners Confined in the County Jail of Hillsborough County, Florida," for the years 1904 though 1909. An index in the front provides the accession number of the prisoner; with that number, researchers can examine basic information about the prisoner, his physical makeup, the crime committed, and the disposition of the case. The Films and Media Materials includes three films. Two of these films describe the cigar industry in Ybor City and exist in 16mm format. The other film is 8mm.

The Michael D. Kolb collection includes materials related to the Kolb's feature film screenplay and stage script, "The Lectors." Supplementary materials provided by the author provide the following synopsis: An elderly Julian Abuzmann, a hand rolling cigar maker and cigar shop owner, tells his grandson and his friends the story of the great Lectors strike that rocked the cigar industry in Ybor City – Tampa, Florida at the start of the Depression. After cigar manufactures cut wages, John Crawford, a communist organizer for a new cigar makers union, asks Julian, a young lector in a factory, to persuade the lectors to distribute propaganda and speak out for the union. To the chagrin of Isobel, his wife, Julian speaks along with Benito, an elder lector who is his best friend, at a labor rally broken up by the KKK. Later that evening, vigilantes beat Julian. After an inflammatory reading to the factory workers, Moses Castillo, the boss at Benito's factory, bans him and tears down his lector's platform. During another rally, violence erupts between KKK vigilantes and the cigar makers. Then the communists cause several factories to strike. Benito persuades Julian to let him lead the strike because he says Julian has a family. Julian and other lectors continue reading in the factories, as the tension rises. On Thanksgiving, John Crawford's communists agitate the cigar makers to go on strike. Then the manufacturers, led by Charles Jeffers, change the strike into a lock out. The cigar makers march violently to the factories in protest and hold more rallies. Julian and Benito hatch a plan to play good guy/bad guy with the manufacturers. Julian begins to seek a peaceful solution, while Benito continues to protest. Violence and negotiations last for several weeks. A federal injunction and threats by the secret committee of the twenty-five, a vigilante group, stops the cigar makers. During a climatic rally, Julian, Benito and several other lectors make passionate speeches about patriotism and the flag in order to persuade the cigar makers to resolve the strike. Intertwined into the story is how Julian and his wife confront their differences to conceive another child, along with scenes depicting the Spanish culture, the holiday celebrations of the cigar makers and the society balls of the manufacturers, and the cigar makers performing their craft.
