Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains photographs, documents, and C.D.s about the life of Tampa cigar tycoon D. Angel Cuesta.

Biographical / historical:

D. Angel Cuesta was a cigar maker and factory owner who helped to establish Tampa, though specifically Ybor City, as the cigar capitol of the United States. Cuesta was born in Asturias, Spain in 1858 where he lived until he moved to Havana, Cuba in 1873 for school. In Havana, Cuesta apprenticed as a cigar maker, leading him to immigrate to America and open a cigar factory in Tampa in 1893. Cuesta's partnership with Peregrino Rey, which ultimately led to the formation of the cigar company Cuesta-Rey and Co., would cement his name in Tampa history. Cuesta's Hyde Park home, now known as the Cuesta-Hixon house, as well as the red neon sign bearing he and Rey's names which sits atop the J.C. Newman Co. cigar factory, are remaining reminders of his legacy.
