Abstract Or Scope

The collection consists of a letter dated January 25, 1869, from A. B. Temple to A. R. Hunter, sent from the St. James Hotel, Jacksonville, Florida. The correspondent writes in a highly descriptive manner, and he provides details concerning business, travel and leisure activities in Jacksonville and the surrounding region. He relates his impressions of Florida upon his arrival in Jacksonville, stating "it is the largest place in the state, with about 6,000 inhabitants," but compares its enterprise unfavorably to his previous country town of far fewer inhabitants. He recounts several boating, hunting and fishing trips along the St. Johns River, with frequent sightings of alligators on the river banks. He also mentions visits to orange groves in Palatka (75 miles) and to another grove 130 miles from Jacksonville, and provides interesting information about orange production, the price of oranges and the cost of acreage. He observes there are "almost all prices for land if they think a man wants to buy."

Abstract Or Scope

Frank T. Brogan was the fifth president of Florida Atlantic University serving from 2003-2009. These photographs document his tenure. FAU reached a new height in its scholastic achievements under his guidance. President Brogan raised academic requirements for students thus allowing the university to move forward in becoming a research university. In order to foster a feeling of community for students he instituted the Freshman Convocation. He was proud of FAU's distinction of having one of the most diverse student bodies in the United States. The quality of research increased at the university by both increasing the number of grants awarded and developing partnership and mergers. He oversaw the evolution of the Charles E. Schmidt Bio-science Center into a biomedical center which was one step closer to FAU medical school. In the meantime, he created a partnership with the University of Miami's Miller School of Medicine, in the now ended program, of joint enrollment for FAU students. This program allowed graduates of the biomedical program to enter the Miller School of Medicine for their medical degree. Another example of his innovative approach in creating a foundation for research was the merger between FAU and Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute. President Brogan earned a master's degree from FAU in 1981. There are 38 photographs in the collection. To provide a sample of the collection, 11 photographs were digitizes and described.
