2 Linear Feet
Abstract Or Scope

Lewis Johnston was a C-47 Pilot. He flew in the 61st Troop Carrier Squadron. In the manuscript Mr. Johnston talks about dropping paratroopers during D-Day, and all the problems that arose. Described in the manuscript is the fog that broke off the formations and the German flak guns. Mr. Johnston defends the C- 47 pilots from claims that they caused paratroopers to be dropped off target. The counter claim was that weather and fog caused planes to break formation. Also included is the diary of Technical Sergeant Bing Woods, a crew chief of a C- 47. Mr. Bing talked about D-Day and the preparations made before and after missions. Bing was responsible for the aircraft's proper working and the safety of the cargo.

Abstract Or Scope

Lewis J. Feucht served in the Pacific Theater (PTO) as a radio operator in the US Marine Corps. Feucht enlisted 18 January 1944, and left the Marines on 7 May 1946. He later fought from 1950-51 in the Korean War. Feucht describes boot camp training in San Diego, his assignment to USS General M.M. Patrick (AP-150), and more training on Guadalcanal. He also tells of landing on Okinawa to reinforce already-held positions and to secure the remainder of the island. As a radio operator, he gives an account of his observation duty for the seizure of Shuri Castle on Okinawa. This typed memoir includes a copy of a poem he found composed by an unknown soldier of the First U.S. Marine Division, which was in the battle around Shuri Castle. Following Okinawa, his unit moved to China where they manned a radio observation unit at an airstrip in Tientsin. His collection is a typed memoir and includes some of his own poems along with the copy of the anonymous one he found on Okinawa.
