Background
- Scope and content:
Maxine Newlander served as a U.S. Navy nurse during World War II. Serving in the United States as well as in Guam, Newlander wrote almost daily to her family back home describing her experiences in the Navy and the nature of her work. In letters she sent home to her family during the war, she describes her social life on the island of Guam, her life as a Navy Nurse, and her longing for the war to be over. The letters span from 1944 to 1945. The photographs illustrate Maxine Newlander's life in the Navy.
- Biographical / historical:
Maxine Newlander born December 22, 1921, in Fort Collins, Colorado, was 21 years old when she joined the US Navy Nurse Corps in 1942 after graduating from St. Joseph's School of Nursing in her hometown of Fort Worth, Texas. She served as a Navy Nurse from November of 1942 to February of 1946. Newlander served in three US States—at Great Lakes, Illinois, Norfolk, Virginia, and Oakland, California. In 1944 she was transferred to the Fleet Hospital 115 in Guam. As a nurse in the hospital ward on Guam, she cared for those wounded in battle in Okinawa and Iwo Jima. Over the course of her four years of service, she earned the ranking of Lieutenant.
Following the war, Newlander married Jack Newlander, a Navy lieutenant dentist, and they moved to Massachusetts. Maxine lived in Massachusetts working as a bloodmobile nurse for over twenty years. Following the death of her husband, she moved to Palatka, Florida, where she lived until her death on March 25, 2016.
