Esther Oberg Diaries, 1920-1929

2.00 Linear Feet 6 diaries other_unmapped
Abstract Or Scope

These six diaries were found in the Dr. John O. Sullivan Collection. Research was conducted in order to find more information about Esther L. Oberg, the author of the diaries, but none could be found. One of the journals, labeled "My Trip Abroad" mentions her returning "home" to Stockholm, Sweden. She wrote in her journals that she attended the first and second Summer Schools for Women Workers in Industry at the Bryn Mawr College, in 1921 and 1922. From 1923-1926 she was presumably a faculty member at Bryn Mawr in Pennsylvania and/or at Brookwood College in Katanoah, New York. In these diaries Oberg also mentions being part of the Y.W.C.A. These diaries contain day-to-day experiences at the Bryn Mawr Summer School in 1921 and 1922. The diaries also contain notes from lectures she attended, discussions she listened to, and lists of names and addresses of students and faculty members that attended the summer school from 1923-1926. Some of the journals contain only hand-written, typed and pasted in quotes and prayers.

Minnie L. Gatewood Papers, 1892-1900

12 Linear Feet
Abstract Or Scope
Minnie L. Gatewood (1875-1944), who married a minister when she was 16 years old, kept diaries chronicling her life in Southwest Florida.  The five volumes of her diary at Florida Gulf Coast University cover her life from 1892 to 1900, and are a valuable resource for scholars of Florida history.  Mrs. Gatewood also kept a "Want Book"—mostly reflections on religious matters such as "Christian stewardship"—with the latest dated entry being from 1936.  The 5 volumes of her diary and her Want Book have been transcribed and digital versions available on FGCU's Digital Library.  FGCU has also prepared lists of names mentioned in the diaries to assist researchers. Mrs. Gatewood wrote mainly of her travels and family life, and her role as a minister's wife.  Her husband, the Rev. George W. Gatewood (1862-1947), was an influential figure in Southwest Florida during his day.  The Gatewoods and their children either lived in or travelled to cities ranging as far south as Key West and as far north as Leesburg.  FGCU also owns a copy of Rev. Gatewood's book, On Florida's Coconut Coasts, which was published in 1944.  Their granddaughter, Hazel Hoffman Wall, donated a copy of her 2006 autobiography, Cracker Girl; A Love Story, in which she writes about her family, including the older Gatewoods.

Ellis Hughes papers, 1813-1866, Date acquired: 00/00/1974

0.42 Linear Feet 3 boxes
Abstract Or Scope
The Ellis Hughes papers consist of Hughes' journal, kept during the Second Seminole War, a transcription of his journal entries and miscellaneous material which are housed in one document box and one phase box. The bulk of the documentation falls with the range of the 1830s through the 1840s with the balance of the material covering the 1850s through 1861. The materials principally consist of transcriptions and photocopies of Hughes' journal during his tour of duty as an Assistant Surgeon in Florida during the years 1838-1840. The contents of the journal provide a wealth of information on Florida during the first half of the 19th century, including descriptions of Native American, specifically Seminole, life and culture, the daily activities of military personnel, natural history subjects and American social customs. Included in Hughes' descriptions of Seminole life are phonetic representations of various words in the Seminole language. In addition, Hughes provides a visual dimension with sketches of people, animals, and places he visited.
