Robert A. Matthews served in the Navy in the Pacific Theater (PTO). Matthews entered the Navy on 15 March 1943 and attended the V-12 Pre-midshipmen Program at the University of Pennsylvania and at Camp McDonough, Plattsburg, New York. He later attended midshipman school at Northwestern University in Chicago and was then stationed at San Francisco, Pearl Harbor, the Russell Islands, the Soloman Islands, Saipan, and Guam. Russell was an officer in the LCT (Landing Craft Truck) Flotilla 6 before being transferred to LCT Flotilla 36 when he was stationed at Saipan. Matthews' duties included commanding a LCT, disposal of surplus war material, and acting as a maintenance officer for the LCT fleet when it was mothballed. The collection includes a manuscript recounting Matthews' experiences during the war. These include the role of alcohol, morphine, and religious services in the lives of soldiers stationed in the Pacific. Matthews also participated in the unloading of the USS Indianapolis, the ship which delivered the two atomic bombs used in the war.
