Background
- Scope and content:
The Menzel Collection consists of over 12,000 reprints, journal articles, scholarly papers, scientific reports, and bulletins that focus on all aspects of marine life in the United States. Some of the most prominent subjects in the collection are reprints of sources that pertain to fisheries, marine fauna, and several types of fish, marine arthropods, and mollusca. Several prominent authors frequently cited in the collection are Gordon Gunter and Clark Hubbs, both renowned marine biologists.
- Biographical / historical:
Robert Winston Menzel was born in James City County, Virginia on January 29, 1920. Graduating from The College of William and Mary in 1940 with a Bachelor's of Science in Botany, he received his Masters in Aquatic Biology from The University of Virginia in 1943 and his PhD in Biology from Texas A and M University in 1954. Menzel's career began as a research assistant at the Virginia Fisheries Lab. He also spent much of his early career as an educator at Texas A and M University, where he held such titles as Assistant Biologist, Biologist for the Texas A and M Research Foundation, and Assistant Professor. In 1954, Menzel became assistant professor for the department of Marine Biology at Florida State University (FSU). Menzel invested a great deal of his work in researching and documenting marine life as a biology instructor at the FSU Gulf Coast Research Lab at Turkey Point, and was one of the leading educators instrumental in the establishment of the FSU Oceanography Department. Menzel served as professor in this department from 1970-1985. He died in 1989.
- Acquisition information:
- The Menzel Collection was given to the Paul A.M. Dirac Science Library in 1989.
- Custodial history:
The Menzel Collection originally was originally a library for marine researchers at the Florida State University Marine Lab at Turkey Point, Florida.
- Processing information:
The Menzel Collection was processed from June 2009-February 2010.
- Arrangement:
The Menzel Collection is arranged in three series: Accession Number, Publications and Reports, and Miscellaneous Reports and Proceedings. The Accession Number series is arranged by the original accession number scheme Menzel created for the Marine Laboratory Library, and is further divided into two subseries. Both subseries are arranged by accession number. However, within that accession number arrangement, the first subseries is arranged alphabetically by the author's last name, and the second subseries is arranged chronologically. The Publications and Reports and the Miscellaneous Reports and Proceedings are arranged chronologically by publication date.
