Letter, August 15, 1864, Captain Samuel W. Clarke, Company E, 2nd Maine Cavalry Volunteers, Camp [of] 2nd Maine Cavalry, Pensacola, Florida to Major George B. Drake, Fort Barrancas, tendering his resignation as Captain, citing insulting behaviour toward him by Colonel E. W. Woodman in the presence of other units. 4 pp. (1 leaf, folded); evidence o tri-fold filing system, p. 4. &nnsp; Countersigned (p. 4) by Colonel Commanding G. W. Woodman, August 15, 1864 who disapproved of the resignation and forwarded to Brigadier General Alexander Asboth. Asboth has signed it, August 28, 1864 as Commander, Hadquarters of West Florida at Barrancas, also disapproving the resignaton. It is countersigned by Major General Banks' Adjutant Thomas H. Nolan, for Banks, at the Command Headquarters, Department of the Gulf, September 13, 1864, also endorsing Asboth's decision to not approve the resignation. &nnsp; Clarke (pp. 1-3) claimed that officers of the 2nd Maine had engaged in a friendly evening drinking meeting but the next day had been called out in the presence of assembled companies where Woodman ordered whiskey rations for all the men, disparaging the officers and has done other 'petty tyrannies.' Woodman states the information is not correct and such resignation would not be a benefit to the Army. Banks noted the resignation is 'not sufficient' and that there had been large numbers of such resignation requests.
