The Fred Bautz Cigar Label Collection covers a wide range of artistic styles used in cigar advertisement, as well as lithographic techniques used in creating those labels. The collection covers labels from the late 19th century through the mid-1940s, and geographically covers examples from the United States and Europe. The labels from the 1920s were also among the last to use the old chromolithographic printing process. The proofs themselves have a wide range of color use, ranging from six to twenty colors per proof, and include examples from several lithographic corporations, such as American Lithography, Hepenheimer and Sons, Whitch and Schmidt, GeorgeĀ Harris, Schumaker and Ettlinger, and Haywood S. and V. Lithographers.
