Background

Scope and content:

The collection includes Dr. Edward Conradi's papers from 1897-1981 and consist of correspondence, legal papers, bills, articles, clippings, publications, speeches, photographs, memorabilia, as well as notes on the history of Florida State College for Women from which his "Memoirs of Edward Conradi," was written.

Biographical / historical:

Edward Conradi was born in Ohio, and earned a Ph. D. in psychology from Clark University in Indiana. In 1909, he was appointed dean and shortly after president of Florida State College for Women (FSCW), a predecessor institution of Florida State University.  In fact, he became one the longest serving presidents of FSCW. By 1915, he succeeded in developing a program that was recognized by the Southern Association of Colleges & Secondary Schools. Later, Dr. Conradi's work in furthering the development of Florida State College for Women, led to the institution being approved by the Association of American Universities in 1924. While serving as president, Dr. Conradi also taught FSCW's first experimental psychology course. The FSU biology building was named in his honor and the College of Arts & Sciences first Endowed Chair in the Psychology Department was also created in his honor in 1991.
