Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains framed plaques, certificates, and commemorative materials recognizing the accomplishments of the Mu Mu Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa at Broward College. Items include correspondence, award plaques for state and national achievements, recognition for service, and framed documents highlighting chapter honors. Together, they trace the progression of student-led excellence and academic honors initiatives spanning four decades.

Of particular note, the unofficial mascot of the Mu Mu Chapter is the cow—specifically the white-and-black Holstein variety. During the 1980s and 1990s, members fully embraced this association, incorporating bovine imagery into chapter culture and collecting an assortment of cow-themed memorabilia. As a result, the collection includes numerous items such as hats, figurines, stuffed animals, plaques, signage, and other ephemera reflecting this long-standing and good‑natured tradition. The connection, perhaps unsurprisingly, stems from the phonetic resemblance between "Mu Mu" and "Moo Moo."

Biographical / historical:

The Mu Mu Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society was established in 1962 at Broward College, Central Campus, making it the earliest chapter founded within the Broward College system. Phi Theta Kappa (PTK), the international honor society for two-year colleges, recognizes academic excellence, leadership, service, and fellowship among community and state college students. Over the decades, the Mu Mu Chapter has exemplified PTK's mission by fostering student success, scholarship, and civic involvement.

Since its founding, the chapter has maintained a distinguished record, including State Championships in the Brain Bowl (1989 and 1990) and multiple five-star regional awards in the 1990s. PTK Mu Mu members have won state and national recognitions under the auspices of the Robert "Bob" Elmore Honors College, the academic home of Broward's high-achieving students. The collection also features community engagement memorabilia such as the "Friends of Our Troops" fan-mail drive (2003), reflecting Mu Mu's active role in service programs extending beyond academics.
