Background

Scope and content:

Consists of manuscript materials, news clippings, photographs, scrapbooks, publications, artifacts and other materials documenting the history of Knight and Wall Hardware Company, one of Tampa's leading hardware firms.

Biographical / historical:

Knight and Wall was established January 19, 1884, by Henry Laurens Knight and Perry G. Wall. In 1891, the firm built a three-story building at the corner of Tampa and Lafayette Streets. By 1909, the store had branches in Ybor City and West Tampa, as well as in Havana, Cuba, and was the leading hardware firm on Florida's west coast. During the 1920s, Knight and Wall established a subsidiary, Tampa Paint and Varnish Company, producing Seminole Paint. In 1951, the retail hardware operation of the firm was sold. The company focused on wholesale and moved its headquarters to a large warehouse. The firm moved to a new warehouse on Adamo Drive in 1967, which remained active until 1982.
