Background
- Scope and content:
This collection contains the manuscript for the novel A New World for Simon Ashkenazy by David Markish and the Collection of Orion Poetry by Michael Gendelev (Mikhail Gendelev). These works are inspired by Russian born writers, both of Jewish heritage, who emigrated to Israel for more permissive creative freedom in the 1970s.
- Biographical / historical:
David Markish (b. 1938) Russian poet, originally from Moscow, who migrated to Israel in the 1970s due to the anti-semitism he experienced in his country of birth. He was marked by what happened to his father, Peretz Markish, who was murder as part of a group of Jewish writers. His life has an imprint in his literary work, and has always written in his native language. His books have been translated in other languages, like Hebrew and English.
Mikhail Gendelev (1950-2009) studied to be a doctor in his birth city Leningrad, in the former URSS, but considered himself a poet. He formed part of a tradition of literary doctors. Gendelev moved to Israel in the 1970s as part of a wave of Jews immigrants from the Soviet Union, and lived in a Russian-speaking community. He published his first poetry book in 1979, wrote in russian and printed in Israel. He considered himself an Israeli poet, but it wasn't until 2000 that he published a collection of poems translated into Hebrew.
