Summary

Creator:
Windermere Squares Dancing Club (Windermere, Fla.)
Abstract:
The Windermere Squares Dancing Club scrapbook documents dances and events hosted by the Windermere Squares Dance Club from November 1962 until August 1964 in Windermere, Florida. The scrapbook chiefly consists of photographs and newspaper clippings, which are dated chronologically and annotated. The square-dancing club's activities are reflective of Southern society and culture and provide a historical glimpse at the social practices of Central Floridians during the 1960s. The Windermere Squares Dancing Club operated on the second and fourth Saturdays of each month at the Windermere Civic Club in Windermere, Florida. Dances were occasionally themed, with club members wearing special costumes according to the specific theme. The Windermere Squares often collaborated with other square-dancing clubs in Florida such as the Sarasota Knotheads and the Orlo Vista Fire House Squares. In the 1940s to 1960s, the modern western square dance became very popular with dancing clubs sprouting throughout Florida and other states. The square dance was adopted as the official state dance of Florida in 1986. While the Windermere Squares are no longer active, other square-dancing clubs continue to operate in the Central Florida area.
