Background

Scope and content:

The notebook is a small book consisting of 33 leaves (6 blank) and 7 partial leaves. The major portion of the notebook contains business transactions between Lewis Gregory and various other persons whose names are mentioned and whose names or family names are found in early Gadsden County history. The business entries date from 1837 to 1861 and deal with beef, pork, mutton, sugar, peas, corn, tobacco, cotton, butter, etc. Near the back of the notebook are found eleven pages of family records dating from 1781 to 1885.

Includes Gregory family notes found among the papers of the late W.G. Fletcher. Many family names are mentioned. The accession number of the Gregory Family notebook was 76-1 and the notes 1-12.

The Gregory Family Notebook has been digitized and is available through the FSU Digital Library.

Biographical / historical:

Miss Agnes Gregory (donor) is the great great granddaughter of Jason Gregory whose ante-bellum mansion built in 1834 stands in Torreya State Park. The Gregory family was part of early Gadsden County history and in Florida history. The notebook has the name William S. Gregory in several places but most of the notations mention Lewis Gregory.
