Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains Moore's own handwritten notes, often in the form of a single word or phrase on 5 by 7 inch note cards. Also includes extensive (and unpublished) interviews with figures central to the 1988 trial of brothers Dean and Scott McKee; memorabilia related to Joe DiMaggio; historical photographs of Tampa's African American communities from the early part of the 20th century; and correspondence with expatriate poet and author Maxwell Bodenheim.

Biographical / historical:

University of South Florida professor Jack Moore's four-decade career in academia covered a number of disciplines, including: American literature, African-American studies, pop culture, photography, and baseball. He established USF's American Studies department in 1962 and served as its chairman for 14 years.

Moore received his doctorate in American literature from the University of North Carolina. He wrote scholarly articles and books on African American historian W.E.B. DuBois, baseball player Joe DiMaggio, poet Maxwell Bodenheim, Tampa-area photographers the Burgert Brothers, and the cultural history of skinheads, as well as fictional works. He was director of the local chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union for five years and served on the board of directors for the Hillsborough County Friends of the Library.

Moore retired in 2002 and passed away in 2003.
