Background

Scope and content:

In 1871, Joseph Keppler, an Austrian-born cartoonist, created Puck Magazine -- a satire magazine filled with cartoons, caricatures, and commentary on political and social issues of the day. Originally only published in German, Puck evolved from a nearly-failed periodical publication to one of the most popular humor magazines in the United States in the 19th century. Keppler published the first English-language issue of Puck in 1877, which became widely popular for featuring three lithographs versus one. Each Puck publication features a full-color chromolithograph print on the front cover, a double-page centerfold, and a lithograph or cartoon strip on the back of the issue. The English language version of Puck was published for more than 40 years under Keppler, later being bought in 1916 by William Hearst's company and ceasing production two years later, in 1918. Each Puck contains a series of editorial articles commenting on issues of the day, as well as two to three full pages of advertisements. In this collection, many of the choromolithographs are by Louis Dalrymple and Frederick Opper, both notable American cartoonists during the 19th century.
