Background

Scope and content:

As a teenager in Tallahassee, Florida, Joan (pronounced & sometimes written as Joanne) Newman graduated from Leon High School in 1944 and went on to Florida State College for Women (FSCW). Her collection contains three scrapbooks that she kept during the war years, from 8 August 1941 - 2 September 1945. They mostly contain news clippings from local papers and programs and other items from Leon High School where she was treasurer of the Pierian Honor Society. The Pierian Honor Society sponsored a drive for war bonds and stamps, and nine campus groups raised over $29,000. While in high school, she volunteered for the local Red Cross, and the collection contains a photo along with her membership card and pin. The majority of the scrapbook pages contain war news although there are some clippings about Tallahassee. Home Front.
