The Patrick Edwards Clements collection primarily consists of newspaper articles, columns, and clippings, correspondence, and audio cassettes. All material in the collection is related to Clements' professional career as a journalist focused on LGBTQ+ issues in Florida in the 1990s.
- Biographical / historical:
Patrick Edwards Clements studied English at the University of Virginia and began writing articles for the university's student newspaper, The Cavalier Daily. He went on to work as a journalist for multiple publications in the Tampa Bay area, including Stonewall, The Gazette, Creative Loafing, and the St. Petersburg Times. Clements' work centers on issues in the LGBTQ+ community. He wrote extensively about the Human Rights Ordinance which granted protections for sexual orientation, as well as the ensuing "Take Back Tampa" movement which sought to prohibit those protections. Clements additionally hosted the "Out in the Open" radio show on WMNF, a Tampa Bay radio station for independent progressive programming. "Out in the Open" featured interviews with prominent local and national LGBTQ+ community members and discussions of critical issues within the LGBTQ+ community.
