Background

Scope and content:

The records, dated 1922-1987, include meeting minutes, correspondence, reports, rules and bylaws, membership materials, scrapbooks, photographs, and newspaper clippings. The membership records cover the period from 1930 to 1952.

Biographical / historical:

The Business and Professional Women's Club of Tampa was organized in 1919 and was the first professional association for working women in the city. The club was one of the first business women's associations to affiliate with the National Federation of Business and Professional Women's Clubs, receiving its charter in January 1920.

Between 1920 and 1987, the Business and Professional Women's Club of Tampa worked to increase opportunities for equal participation by women in the economic and political life of the city, state, and nation. Among other activities, the club awarded educational scholarships to young women in Tampa, raised funds for such organizations as the Girl's Club of Tampa, and actively supported the establishment of scholarship houses at Florida State University and the University of Central Florida. A history of the Tampa charter compiled for its golden anniversary celebration in 1969 documented 50 years of accomplishments.

By 1987, the club's membership had dwindled significantly. In May of that year, the Business and Professional Women's Club of Tampa surrendered its charter and ceased to exist, leaving its legacy to younger, more active chapters that had sprung up throughout Hillsborough County. The minutes, programs, correspondence and other papers documenting the history of the club were given to the USF Libraries for permanent preservation as part of Tampa's historical heritage.
