Background
- Scope and content:
Reproductions of 21 volumes of the minutes for the Fort Lauderdale Women's Club Executive Board meetings and membership meetings dating from 1911 through 1967.
- Biographical / historical:
The Fort Lauderdale Woman's Club was founded on January 11, 1911 (then known as Woman's Civic Improvement Association), which predated Fort Lauderdale's incorporation as a city. Over the years it organized fundraising for various efforts such as the 1926 Hurricane relief, World War II war bonds, the building of the Holy Cross Hospital, Broward Pioneer Days, and the Special Olympics of Broward County. The Woman's Club library building cornerstone was laid on December 29, 1916 and the building was completed in 1917. After the completion of the Club building the members began collecting books for a club borrowing library, which was soon opened to the public as the first public library in Broward County. In 1925 the club gave the library to the City of Fort Lauderdale, becoming the first municipal library in Broward County and in 1972 became one of the branches of the Broward County Library system. Throughout the years the club continued to support the development of the library, raising funds and holding book drives in order to build the collections.
