Background

Scope and content:

This collection involves various artifacts such as audio interviews, newspapers, brochures, and catalogs from various artists, particularly Cuban-American artists. This includes Cesar Trasobares, painter Alfonzo, Mexican abstract painter and architect Fernando Garcia, and Wilfredo Lam.

Biographical / historical:

Helen Kohen was born June 4, 1931 and grew up in Brooklyn, New York and graduated from Smith College in Northhampton, MA, in 1953, followed by her move to Miami Beach to start her career in the arts. In 1978, Kohen began a new extension of her career by working as an art critic for the Miami Herald until her retirement in 1995. According to Michele Oka Doner, the Miami Beach artist who did the half-mile A Walk on the Beach installation at the Miami International Airport, "Helen was the pioneer. She pulled out the rocks and tilled the soil. She made fertile ground so the art world could plant Miami Art Basel, the Wynwood Walls, and become a legendary destination for the aspiring and the acquisitive."
