The South Bank Apartments Collection contains newspaper articles, photographs, and photographic negatives dating from 1963 to 1965 documenting the development and construction of the South Bank Apartments located at 601 North Rio Vista Blvd, Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
- Biographical / historical:
The construction of the South Bank Apartments was announced in July 1964 by developer Robert G. Garvin (1922-1989). At the time, the project was heralded as an antidote to the 1960s-era urban decay in Fort Lauderdale's struggling downtown area. The building was designed by the prominent local architects Edward Bywaters (1929-2005) and Charles Duemmling (1928-2011). A groundbreaking ceremony was held in October 1964, and construction was slated to be completed in February of 1965. The contractor for the project was Vic Maffey.
Robert "Bob" Garvin was a World War II Amry Air Corps veteran and a civic activist in Fort Lauderdale. In 1985 Garvin married Celia Liz Beukelman. In 1994, C. Liz Garvin donated the materials in this collection to the Broward County Historical Commission.
