Biographical / historical:

Moe Katz was born in New York on June 27, 1900. A realtor, Katz moved with his brother Mack (known as Max), a clothing retailer, and sister-in-law, Sayde, from New York City to Daytona, Florida, in 1922. Two years later, the Katz family moved to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. Moe Katz received the first Florida real estate license in 1924 and joined the Chamber of Commerce in 1925. His involvement in property appraising and real estate led him to join the Board of Directors of First Federal saving and Loan Association of Broward County in 1935. Soon after, he became the First Federal's Chief Appraiser and Executive Vice President. For more than 50 years, Katz was an active member of the Fort Lauderdale's Board of Realtors.

Katz quest for a place of Jewish worship began with the Lauderdale Hebrew Congregation in 1925. He also acquired blocks of the Evergreen Cemetery, the oldest cemetery in Fort Lauderdale, for the purpose of apportioning plots for Jewish burials. In 1937, Katz established the first synagogue in Broward County, Temple Emanu-El, a Reform Jewish temple. He became its first president. Katz also joined other organizations such as the city's Planning and Zoning Board, the Board of Trustees of the Fort Lauderdale Historical Society, and the Fort Lauderdale Easter Seal Rehabilitation Clinic Elks, Masons, and Shriners. In 1980, he was honored by the National Conference of Christians and Jews for his service to the community. Moe Katz died on June 26, 1982, in Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
