- Biographical / historical:
After the Civil War, several families bought plots of land and settled in what was known as the "Lake Jesup community." The settlement received its name "Oviedo" from the postmaster of the new post office, Andrew Aulin in 1879. Oviedo residents worked in the citrus and celery industries and founded family-owned companies such as Nelson and Company, Wheeler Fertilizer Company, and A. Duda and Sons. Seminole County was established in 1913, and Oviedo was the second city in the county.
In 1925, the City of Oviedo was chartered by the Florida State Legislature. The City celebrated its centennial in 1979. The City of Oviedo experienced significant growth in the later 20th century with the establishment of new newspapers and the new Florida Technological University (FTU), later renamed the University of Central Florida. With this growth came increased efforts to preserve Oviedo, Florida's history.
