- Scope and content:
The papers of Dr. Mary Jane Ryals contain a manuscript of her book A Messy Job I Never Did See a Girl Do published in 1999, a handwritten outline and the beginning of her story "Swallow Dance,"and a manuscript of the short story "Where the Shadows Tangle and Snare and Sing," which she states was "workshopped before publication." The manuscript of A Messy Job I Never Did See a Girl Do contains 11 short stories (the actual book contains 12 stories).
- Biographical / historical:
Dr. Mary Jane Ryals earned her PhD in English at Florida State University (FSU) and teaches Business Communications at the College of Business, FSU. She published A Messy Job I Never Did See a Girl Do, a short story collection, in 1999 and North of Wakulla: An Anhinga Anthology, a collection of poetry, in 1990. In addition, her stories and poems have been published in many literary magazines in the United States and overseas. Among her awards are a fellowship from FSU, a Florida Arts Council Grant, and an NEH research grant for her writing.
