Background
- Scope and content:
This collection consists of an oral history interview transcript of a U.S. Army Air Corps cook and baker, who served in England during World War II in the 2003rd Ordnance Unit at Melchbourne Park. This collection also contains a unit history.
- Biographical / historical:
Charles Crampton was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan on March 11, 1924, and entered the service on February 22, 1943. Crampton's induction occurred at Camp Grant, Illinois and his basic training was at Kessler Field, Mississippi. Due to an elbow injury sustained in his adolescence, Crampton chose to enter the cook and baker's school in Fort Warren, Wyoming where he trained for 3-4 months. He met his future wife at his next post in Syracuse, New York and also served at Camp Kilmer in Princeton, New Jersey before he deployed to Europe.
Crampton was assigned to the Eighth Air Force and, at first, sent to the 1917th Ordnance Bomb Unit as a substitute cook. He was eventually reassigned to the 2003rd Ordnance Unit located in Melchbourne Park. The unit serviced the nearby air base. Crampton was discharged March 3, 1946, and married his wife April 1st the same year. Together, they had three children. He passed away at the age of 91 in Tallahassee, Florida on September 30, 2015.
