Background
- Scope and content:
This collection is comprised primarily of typescripts and carbon copies of correspondence, legal documents, and other papers from the files of Tampa lawyer Martin Caraballo, receiver of the Sanchez and Haya Real Estate Company and trustee for the Sanchez estate. The papers relate primarily to management of rental properties, real estate, and other assets belonging to the Company and the Sanchez estate. It includes a small number of documents relating to the Sanchez y Haya Cigar Company and its acquisition by Gradiaz-Annis Company in 1930. Also present are documents relating to several lawsuits involving the Sanchez estate. The bulk of the papers date from the period 1923 to 1942 and chronicle the declining fortunes of the Sanchez estate (due to the economic distress generated by the collapse of the Florida land boom in 1925-1926 and the subsequent economic depression of the 1930s).
