- Biographical / historical:
Eugeniusz Ajzenberg was born on May 28, 1924 in Losice, Poland. During World War II, he and his sister escaped Poland from the Nazi invasion and made their way to the Soviet Union where he labored in Siberia for a period of time until the end of the war. With his family having been killed or captured, Ajzenberg was placed in an orphanage after the war where he attended high school. While finishing high school in the orphanage, he was given a chance to attend engineering school in Russia where he specialized in tractors and tractor engines. It was at that time that Eugeniusz met his future wife, Raisa, and they began dating. As Eugeniusz was a Jew and Raisa was not, Stalin-era laws at that time prohibited inter-marriage between a Jew and a non-Jew. Upon the death of Stalin, the couple was allowed to marry and had two children, a son, Andrzej, and a daughter, Olga. In the late 1960s they decided to emigrate to the United States where Eugeniusz was hired by the company, Mack, as a supervisor of diesel engine design. In August of 1970, in Washington County, the Ajzenberg family formally changed their names. Eugeniusz Ajzenberg became Eugene Eisenberg, Raisa Pashin Ajzenberg became Rina Eisenberg, Andrzej Eisenberg became Andrew Eisenberg and Olga Ajzenberg became Olga Eisenberg. Eugene resided in Hagerstown, Maryland for the majority of his life only leaving to move to Sarasota in 1992. Eugene passed away in 1997.
