Background
- Scope and content:
Technician Fourth Grade Donald N. Duvick's oral history transcript describes his experiences as a company clerk with the 1265th Engineer Combat Battalion, Company B, of the United States Army. His experiences in Germany as a non-combatant illustrate other roles soldiers were assigned during World War II.
- Biographical / historical:
Donald N. Duvick was born on December 18, 1924, in Sandwich, Illinois and spent much of his life before the war doing farm work. While at the University of Illinois, Duvick was drafted in June 1943. He enrolled in the Army Specialized Training Program but before he could finish he was taken out and sent to Camp Van Dorn for basic training with the 1265th Engineer Combat Battalion, Company B. He was chosen as a company clerk and arrived in Staffordshire, England in November of 1944. He completed more training and was sent to Bremen, Germany where he also helped rebuild damaged railroads and roads. Once the war ended he attended classes in France for a semester waiting for his discharge. He was discharged on April 6, 1946, as a Technician Fourth Grade. After the war, he returned to the University of Illinois and used the GI Bill to fund his education. Donald N. Duvick passed away on May 23, 2006.
