Background
- Scope and content:
The collection includes some printed programs and catalogs from the club's shows and exhibitions but is mostly comprised of handwritten meeting minutes, ledgers, and membership rosters.
- Biographical / historical:
The Students Art Club of Tampa was organized in May 1902 "to encourage and promote the study and appreciation of art in all its forms, among its members, in civic life and in the public schools and to cooperate with other art organizations in arousing public sentiment to the end that a public museum of art representative of all Florida may be established." The Students Art Club met at the Woman's Club House at 2506 North St., Tampa. Throughout its active period, the club had a membership of about 50 elementary and upper school children, plus approximately 20 advisory members and graduate mentors. In 1916 the group collaborated with the American Federation of the Arts for an exhibit of Japanese prints. This exhibit was subsequently documented by Florence Nightingale Levy in The American Art Annual of 1916.
