Background
- Scope and content:
Bound manuscript copy of Legends (After the Basque), containing nineteen "Tales of Faiƫry" written in the winter of 1877-1878 by Thomas Cobbe, adapted from Basque Legends by Wentworth Webster (1877). They comprise 224 pages with 20 original drawings by Janet Finlay Cobbe. The back cover is in poor condition with two of the metal corner pieces still attached. Manuscript pages are in excellent condition and the handwriting is legible.
- Biographical / historical:
Thomas Cobbe was born December 8, 1813, the second of four sons of Charles Cobbe (1781-1857) of Newbridge, county Dublin. Educated at Charterhouse, Oxford (Brasenose) and the Inner Temple, he was admitted to the Bar in January 1841 but does not seem to have practiced as a barrister. He is the author of two published books, The Nobel Traytour (1851) and A History of the Norman Kings of England (1869). He was married on August 22, 1854 to Janet Finlay Grahame (1826-1884), a cousin of George FInlay, the well-known historian of Greece.
