Background

Biographical / historical:

Brian Wilson Aldiss (1925 - 2017) was a science fiction author, a mainstream novelist, a poet, an essayist, a dramatist, a science fiction historian, and a critic whose work was published in dozens of countries around the world. He was born on August 18, 1925 in Dereham, Norfolk, England. In 1943, he was drafted by the Army and was sent to the Britannia Barrack, Norwich; after his training, he joined the Royal Corps of Signals at Catterick Camp, Yorkshire. In 1944, he was transferred abroad and served in India, Assam, Burma, Sumatra, Singapore, and Hong Kong. His experiences here provided material for a number of his books and stories, including the Horatio Stubbs series. Aldiss made his first professional sale in 1954 and published his first book, The Brightfount Diaries, in 1955. He helped found the Oxford University Speculative Fiction Group with C.S. Lewis in 1960. He received OBE (Officer of the British Empire) from Queen Elizabeth in 2005 for services to literature. He wrote in excess of a one-hundred books, many of which were nominated for several awards, including the Nebula, the Locus, the Hugo, and the British Science Fiction Best Novel.
