Background

Scope and content:

The collection contains several boxes of samples of palmetto weaving, including baskets, fans, bottle jackets, dolls, and hats. Also included is a box of photographs related to the publishing of Palmetto Braiding and Weaving, which Julia May Sampley co-authored with Viva Cooke in the late 1940s, as well as photographs which document the Florida State Marketing Board. The papers include a copy of the published volume (autographed by Cooke), which is catalogued in the Floridiana collection of Special Collections.

Biographical / historical:

Julia May Sampley was born in Fort Deposit, Alabama on May 23, 1900. She was the daughter of L. A. Sampley; her mother's name is unknown. She graduated from Milton High School and then attended Draughns Business College in Montgomery, Alabama. She worked as a secretary for the Alger-Sullivan Lumber Company in Century, Florida and for the Bagdad Land and Lumber Company in Bagdad, Florida. Sampley then worked as an assistant to the State Director of Markets. She held that position in Jacksonville, before transferring with the Marketing Board to Winter Haven, Florida. The point at which she became involved with palmetto weaving is unknown, but her book Palmetto Braiding and Weaving, co-written with Viva Cooke, was published in 1947.

Sampley retired at Plant City, Florida where she was active in numerous civic organizations. She died on September 21, 1974 in Plant City, where she is also buried.
