Background
- Scope and content:
The Eastside Elementary School collection consists of documents related to the history of Eastside Elementary School in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The collection contains scrapbooks (also called the "Historian Year Book"), updated by the Parents and Teachers Association historian, classroom photographs albums and other photographs taken during events documenting the school life throughout the academic years.
- Biographical / historical:
Eastside Elementary School was built in 1938. It was located at 1001 E. Broward Boulevard in Fort Lauderdale, Florida. The school was voted for closure on April 9, 1977. The official last day of school was June 14, 1977.
The school has known 5 principals: Mrs. Lilian Crenshaw (1938 [1]-1958). She retired in 1958; Mr. Russel W. Rowe (1958-1960); Mrs. Isabel Shertenlieb (1960-1962). She retired in 1962; Mrs. Avis Peters (1962-1965 [2]); and Mr. James H. Henschel (1965-circa 1974 [3]).
Footnotes: [1] The Fort Lauderdale Daily News and Evening Sentinel mentions Lillian Crenshaw as principal of Eastside Elementary School in 1938 (December 2, 1938). [2] Mrs Peters was still the Principal of Eastside Elementary School in February 1965 (Fort Lauderdale News, February 2, 1965). She then became the Principal at Westwood Heights Elementary School (Fort Lauderdale News, November 4, 1965). Meanwhile, James Henschel was still a teacher at Lloyd Estates Elementary in April 1965 (Fort Lauderdale News, April 28, 1965). Although it is unclear if Mr Henschel arrived at Eastside Elementary School in 1965 or 1966, it is more likely that he became principal when Mrs Avis left in 1965. [3] Although the latest sources in this collection mention Mr. Henschel as principal in 1971, it is more likely that he stayed until 1974. This year, other sources mention that he opened Tamarac Elementary School as its first Principal (See: https://tamaractalk.com/tamarac-elementary-school-celebrates-their-40th-anniversary-14273 ; https://www.legacy.com/us/obituaries/sunsentinel/name/james-henschel-obituary?id=8387302 ; Fort Lauderdale News, December 12, 1974).
