Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains the personal papers, journals, documents, ephemera, and correspondence of the Weiner-Hartzog families in the years before during, and just after World War II. Correspondents include both imediate and extended family members, friends, and coworkers of both families.

Biographical / historical:

The Wiener and Hartzog papers document several American families from the late nineteenth century until mid-twentieth century. The Hartzogs were from early Bethlehem, Pennsylvania area. Marriage joined the Worsley family from Sweden with the Hartzogs at the turn of the twentieth century. Wieners emigrated from Germany in the mid-nineteenth century to marry into the Wussow and Blatz families of Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The families documented their rise in American business and as strong members of their communities. Herbert J. Hartzog practiced law before the Supreme Court of Pennslyvania. Carl Worsley and Emil Wiener established upscale furniture manufacturing businesses in Pennslyvania and Wisconsin respectively. Their children attended prominent schools including Dartmouth, Wellesley and Pine Manor during the 1930's.
