Background

Scope and content:

The Joseph Mackay Collection contains 76 photographs of Dania, Hollywood, and Fort Lauderdale in Broward County during the Florida Land Boom of the 1920s before the Great Miami Hurricane of 1926.

Biographical / historical:

The Florida Land Boom of the 1920s, a phenomenon associated with the extension of the Florida East Coast Railway, the rise of motor transportation, the lure of warm weather and oceanside living, and a period of American prosperity and opportunity, contributed to the construction of Broward County's earliest cities of Dania, Hollywood and Fort Lauderdale. Major accumulators of land included Andrew C. Frost, who began a tomato farm and export business in Dania, and J. W. Young, Jr., a real estate developer and business owner, who envisioned and planned the city of Hollywood. Construction of stores, homes, hotels and more brought residents to Broward County. On September 11, 1926, a catastrophic hurricane, known as the Great Miami Hurricane, made landfall and traveled a path of destruction over the course of ten days through Dade and Broward counties. This resulted in an unprecedented loss of lives and property. As a result of the hurricane's impact, 1925 was the final year of the Boom.
