Background

Scope and content:

Emanuel Lamb served with the Heavy Weapons Company of the 89th Infantry Division. Collection includes letters from Emanuel and his brother Mandy during their time serving overseas, mainly discussing their daily lives, censorship, and treatment of prisoners of war, as well as a complete oral history transcript between Emanuel Lamb and an interviewer discussing his time in combat and his memories of the Battle of the Bulge. There are also newspaper clippings, photocopies of identification cards and ephemera included in the collection.

Biographical / historical:

Emanuel Lamb was born on October 16, 1925, in New York City, before his family moved to Brooklyn a year later. Lamb was still in high school when World War II began. His brother was drafted into the army in 1941, and Lamb was drafted in 1943. Lamb was under 19 years old when he was drafted, so was not immediately sent overseas and into combat. Instead, he completed basic infantry training at Fort Dix, then Camp Wheeler in Georgia. He was eventually assigned to a heavy weapons company of the 89th Infantry Division and was shipped out to England and Belgium in 1944. He participated in the end of the Battle of the Bulge as a runner for his heavy artillery unit's officers, and was one of the first to reach the Rhine River. Lamb also served in the occupation forces in Germany, and was discharged shortly after in 1946.
