Background

Scope and content:

Collection centers around Keller's experience in the U.S. Navy from 1944 to 1946. He sailed as a navigator aboard a Landing Ship, Dock (LSD) in the Pacific Theater of Operations. This collection includes personal correspondence with family, Japanese currency, photographs, and official naval records.

Biographical / historical:

Oliver James Keller attended Phillips Exeter Academy in New Hampshire for high school where he graduated in 1941. He subsequently enrolled at Williams College from 1941 to 1944 before earning a commission in the U.S. Navy with a navigator specialty. The U.S. Navy assigned Ensign Keller to a Landing Ship, Dock (LSD), the U.S.S. Cabildo LSD 16, which started its tour on the American East Coast and traveled through the Panama Canal to the Pacific Theater of Operations. Keller took part in several naval operations in the Pacific, most notably in the Philippines. LTJG Keller assumed command of the LSD as the ship underwent decommissioning in the Spring of 1946. After the war, he returned to Williams College to earn his B.A. in English Literature in 1947. Keller followed up his military service with a civilian career in criminal justice. From 1973 to 1975, he served as the Secretary of Health and Rehabiliative Services for the state of Georgia. President Carter later appointed him U.S. Parole Commissioner for the Southeastern United States.
