Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains a transcript of an interview with Leni Mittelacher, who lived in Marburg, Germany during World War II and Allied occupation.

Biographical / historical:

Magdalena Katharina "Leni" Mittelacher was born on June 14, 1923, in the village of Ulfen, Germany. She later, in 1932, moved to Marburg, Germany near Frankfurt. Her mother was able to prevent her and her siblings from joining the Hitler Youth programs. Mittelacher was hired by the County Administrator as a secretary in 1941. Her family had trouble finding food because of the food shortages, but they were able to start their own small garden in 1944. The American occupation in 1945 helped with food distribution to alleviate the shortage. Immediately after the war, she recounted when the American soldiers dropped leaflets in the town about the Concentration Camps. One of Mittlelacher's brothers died on the Eastern front in Russia and her other brother was Incarcerated by the French. In 1953 she met her husband, Martin Mittelacher, in Marburg. They later moved to the United States, and settled down in Jacksonville, Florida. Mittelacher passed on March 12, 2018.
