Background

Scope and content:

This collection primarily documents Sally McRorie's tenure as Provost of Florida State University. It contains correspondence, memoranda, meeting agendas and minutes, reports, committee files, and proposals for projects and programs. These materials document the university's accreditation through the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS), university advancement and fundraising campaigns, diversity and inclusion initiatives, strategic planning, E&G allocations and budget planning, relations with the Ringling Museum and Asolo Theatre, and discussions regarding university membership in athletics conferences. Also documented are negotiations with the United Faculty of Florida and Graduate Assistants United, planning for a Veterans Center, the reorganization of the College of Arts & Sciences, President Barron's visits to university colleges and schools, and partnerships with the City of Tallahassee, Florida A&M University, and the Mayo Clinic, among others. The collection also documents McRorie's service in the National Association of Schools of Art and Design and contains dissertations largely from the Department of Art Education.

Biographical / historical:

Sally McRorie came to FSU in 1994 as a professor and chair of the Department of Art Education. In 2002 she became Dean of the School of Visual Arts and Dance, known as the College of Visual Arts, Theatre, and Dance after 2004. She served in this role until 2012 when she became the Vice President of the Office of Faculty Development and Advancement under President Eric Barron. In 2015, she served as interim Provost before becoming Provost, a position she held until 2021 when she returned to faculty status. In terms of professional service, McRorie served as President of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) from 2021-2023.

Throughout her career, McRorie was highly involved in the administration of the Ringling Museum of Art as well as the Asolo Conservatory in Sarasota. She oversaw the change in management after the State of Florida transferred responsibility over to FSU in 2002, hired new leadership, and was instrumental in the refurbishment of the property. In her first year as the Vice President of the Office of Faculty Development and Advancement, McRorie worked to ensure SACS (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) reaccreditation and made improvements to the system for the future. As Provost, McRorie worked closely with the Panama City community and campus, working with President Thrasher to hire Dean Randy Hanna in 2016. McRorie considers her greatest accomplishment as Provost to be the improvement in student success and the university's rankings. When assuming the position as Provost in 2015, FSU was ranked 43rd among all public universities. By 2021, FSU was ranked in the top 25 among national public universities according to U.S. News & World Report rankings and the graduation rate was one of the highest in the country.
