Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of 14 Photochrom Prints of Cuba taken by William Henry Jackson and published by Detroit Photographic Company. They are part of the 50000 Series produced in the years of 1900 and 1904. These original prints were sold as souvenirs and depicted places in Havana, Cuba, which is reflected in their titles that appear in each item.

Biographical / historical:

The Detroit Photographic Company, founded in 1897, bought the rights to conduct in the United States the "Photochrom" process developed in Switzerland. The "Photochrom" process allowed them to produce color prints on a large scale and make it accessible to the masses. They produced postcards and prints in a variety of sizes depicting exotic or remote locations. Since color photography was rare at the time, there was a vast interest in these products, which is clear given that the company sold millions of prints annually.

William Henry Jackson (1843-1942), a well known American photographer, joined the company and sold them his black-and-white negatives. Jackson traveled around the world and gained his reputation for his landscapes photographs, especially of the American West. In 1900, he visited Cuba and captured views of the city of Havana, among which the architecture, the port and the parks stand out.

After the 1898 Spanish-American War, the interest in Cuba increased with the acquisition of the territory by the United States and then the establishment of a Republic. These photochrom prints had a promotional purpose focused on those who were curious in visiting the island or knowing what Cuba looked like.
