Background

Scope and content:

The Kennedy Drawbridge was built in 1913 to improve travel between downtown Tampa and Hyde Park and is significant for its engineering, architectural, and cultural qualities. The bridge, adorned with Neoclassical Revival detailing, is the oldest bascule span in Florida. Its rolling lift span technology is uncommon for highway bridges in Florida, with heel-and-trunnion types being more common. The Kennedy Drawbridge Historical Documentation Survey, prepared in 1993 for the State Historic Preservation Office and the Florida Department of Transportation, was conducted in order to document the condition of the bridge before rehabilitation.

This collection contains this Historical Documentation Survey, a photograph index, and photos of the Kennedy Drawbridge.
