Background
- Scope and content:
Promotional materials, programs, news clippings, photographs, correspondence, scrapbooks, publications, player and team stats, and other material documenting Florida State University's Volleyball program activities from 1968-2003.
- Biographical / historical:
The Florida State University Women's Volleyball program was officially established in 1967, initially operating as a club and participating in events such as the Odd/Even rivalry Thanksgiving Day games. It became the university's first women's intercollegiate sports team, preceding the addition of other women's sports such as softball and basketball.
Over the years, the FSU women's volleyball team has recorded multiple achievements, including five ACC Championships, six Metro Conference Championships, and 25 NCAA Tournament appearances.
The program has been led by several coaches throughout its history, including Martha Pat Moore (1968), Judy Blucker (1969), Billie Jones (1970, 1972-1975), Linda Warren (1971), Cecile Reynaud (1976-2001), Todd Kress (2002-2007), and Chris Poole (2008-2025). Notable players in the program's history include Hall of Famers Margie Wessel Scott (1977-1980), Gabrielle Reece (1987-1990), and Maggie Philgence (1987-1990).
Cecile Reynaud served as the women's volleyball coach at Florida State University from 1976 to 2001, making her the longest-tenured coach in the program's history. She played a significant role in the development of the program and worked with multiple generations of student-athletes.
Before joining FSU, Reynaud attended Missouri State University, where she played volleyball and field hockey, graduating in 1975. She began her coaching career at Steelville High School in Missouri, where she coached multiple sports, including volleyball, softball, basketball, and track, and also taught physical education. In 1976, she became the head volleyball coach at Florida State University and shortly after began pursuing graduate studies, eventually earning a master's degree in 1978 and a Ph.D. in 1998. After retiring from coaching in 2001, she remained at FSU as a faculty member in Sports Management until 2015.
During her tenure, the FSU women's volleyball team recorded 650 victories. In addition to her work at FSU, Reynaud was involved with various USA Volleyball programs, including the Junior Olympic team, the USA Women's National Sitting Volleyball team during the 2012 Paralympic Games, and the USA Volleyball Junior Boys Team at the 2015 World Championship.
Reynaud has been recognized for her contributions to the sport through multiple awards and honors. She was inducted into the Florida State University Athletic Hall of Fame in 2009 and the American Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2017. She also received the Friar Award in 2016 and was named Coach of the Year in 1988, 1989, 1992, and 2000. In addition to coaching, Reynaud has authored several books on volleyball coaching, drills, and women in coaching.
Beyond her coaching career, Reynaud was involved in athlete development initiatives, offering programs and lectures on time management, personal responsibility, community service, academic success, nutrition, and sports psychology.
