Series I. Der Ander Theil contains all 43 engravings from the book Der ander Theil, der Newlich Erfundenen Landschafft Americae, von dreyen Schiffahrten, so die Frantzosen in Floridam ... gethan, which was the second volume of the Grand Voyages: America series. Included in this series are English translations of each page, the source(s) and accuracy are unknown, as well as the frames that the engravings were displayed in.
Series II. Other contains two engravings from other volumes from the Grand Voyages: America series.
- Biographical / historical:
Theodor de Bry was born in Belgium, in 1528, to Thiry de Bry the Younger (1495–1590) and Catherine Le Blavier. de Bry the Younger, and his father, were jewellers and engravers of copper plates. de Bry joined the family business, becoming an engraver, goldsmith, editor, and publisher. de Bry's sons, Johann Theodore (1561-1623) and Johann Israel (1565-1609), would later join the business (Wikipedia).
One of Theodor de Bry's more famous works is the multi-volume Les Grands Voyages, the first six parts were published between 1590 and 1598. The first volume was translated into French and English, from the orginal German, while the subsequent parts were only printed in German and Latin (van Groesen 5). The de Bry's edited each translation for the intended audience, omitting or including texts based on political and religous views held by the censors and intended readers (van Groeson 6-11). Jacques Le Moyne de Morgues' (1533?-1588) drawings of his experiences in Florida served as a basis for de Bry's engravings in the second volume of Grands Voyages; America,Der ander Theil, der newlich erfundenen Landschafft Americae, von dreyen Schiffahrten, so die Frantzosen in Floridam ... gethan (Quilligan 4).
