Background
- Scope and content:
This collection is related to Laura Elizabeth Smith Hiott. The collection contains a scrapbook of military base letterheads, booklets: The WAC, Manual for Civil Defense. Also included are newspaper articles from Miami Herald and the Jacksonville (Florida) Times-Union which reveal Ms. Smith Hiott's perspective on major events during the war and often focus on servicewomen.
- Biographical / historical:
Laura Elizabeth Smith Hiott served in the US Army Aircraft Warning Service in Grant, Florida. The Smith's were Florida homesteaders, and her parents were sharecroppers. During the 1930s, the family lived for some years in a railroad car. Ms. Hiott's granddaughter reports that, although she worked at the church on Sundays taking care of children, she was neither particularly religious or particularly political, but her support of President Roosevelt stemmed from a belief that he was in their corner. Ms. Hiott was the eldest of eight children. One of her younger brothers, Elmer E. Smith from Grant, Florida was U.S. Civilian Contractors From Morrison Knudsen Company Who were executed by the Japanese on 7 October 1943 on Wake Island. She assembled the scrapbook during World War II.
