Background

Scope and content:

The Inez Lyons Fisher Collection contains reproduction photographs of Bud Lyons' farm in Margate, Florida, the Lyons family, and Pompano landmarks dating from the 1920s to 1940s. The collection also contains a reproduction of an 1898 photograph of the Lyons family.

Biographical / historical:

Between 1911 and 1939 H.L. "Bud" Lyons acquired 20,000 acres of land in north Broward County and was primarily involved in the production of green beans, which were shipped north out of Pompano. In 1939 he had 4,000 acres under cultivation and was amongst the largest growers of string beans in the United States. Nearly all of the land was reclaimed land drained by Lyons and his workers. The land where his farm was later became the city of Margate. Another part of his property became the city of Coral Springs. The Lyons family resided in Pompano. West Atlantic Boulevard from present day Pompano to Margate was known in the 1930s and 1940s as "Lyons Boulevard" and served as the road down which Lyons and his over 100 workers traveled to reach the farm and transport produce back to Pompano.

Inez Lyons Fisher (1916-2001) was the daughter of Clinton L. Lyons (1891-1932) and Mittie Saxon Lyons (1897-1951), who married in 1915. Clinton worked with his brother Bud in the farming business.
