Background
- Scope and content:
John P. Stone was a platoon leader for the 1st platoon of "I" company, 3rd Battalion, 29th Marines of the U.S. Marine Corp. He led his platoon in the battle of Okinawa in the Pacific Theater and was later promoted to company commander for his actions in that battle. In this capacity, Stone had to respond to letters from parents or other relatives who had learned of their loved ones' - Stone's men's - deaths. The collection contains many of these particularly touching letters, as well as letters to and from Stone, artifacts, documents, an oral history, a manuscript, newspapers, and books.
