Background
- Scope and content:
This collection consists of an oral history interview transcript of Roy Mack Holt, who was enlisted in the U.S. Navy and worked as a Navy aircraft pilot during World War II, serving on anti-submarine patrols on the Atlantic coast and the Caribbean Sea (Cuba, Brazil, and Morocco). The interview covers his life before and after service. The interview also describes his years after the war studying at Florida State University. This collection also includes a small fragment of his obituary.
- Biographical / historical:
Roy Mack Holt was born in Pensacola, FL on December 31, 1921. He graduated from Marion Institute in May 1941 and joined the Naval Academy the following month with the desire of becoming a Navy Aircraft Pilot; however, his poor vision forced him to take the eye examination several times. After finally passing the exam, Holt finished his training in 1943 and was assigned to the 125th Patrol Bombing Squadron in San Julian (Cuba) responsible for performing anti-submarine patrol missions over Mexico and Central America.
After one year there, the squadron was sent, for a short time, to Brazil and Morocco. During that period, Holt decided that he would go to college after the war, so he later enrolled in the Tallahassee Branch of the University of Florida and studied Economics, as it was the most similar major to Business at the time. A devout Baptist, Holt passed away on March 1, 2004 in Birmingham, Alabama.
